The Eastern Cape department of Education has learnt with shock its misrepresentation in the court of public opinion on its initiative to create an awareness of its critical stakeholders on the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender ans intersex awareness campaigns.
A memorandum dated 15th October 2018 was sent to all 12 districts informing them of a planned awareness campaign that will be held in Port Alfred at the Mpekweni Resort.
The memorandum states that this workshop is not going to be attended by learners but by Life Orientations educators and School Governing Body association.
For the record, the memorandum written asking for a collection of learner data was sent to districts requesting them to collate information about the total number learners with disabilities who are studying in the mainstream schools but not receiving state support. The department requested districts to do an audit of those so that the department is able to direct all the support to them as it is a legal requirement to do so.
This activity was to be carried by districts using a template that was designed by the provincial head office. The department requested such information from districts and schools to ensure uniformity and to enable head office to have a credible database for learners with Disabilities.
There is no activity or instruction to district coordinators to create a database for the LGBTI group. The only activity that talks to LGBTI group is the awareness workshop scheduled for 30th October 2018.
The alleged email purporting to be coming from the head office has not been sanctioned by the concerned and the Special Programs Unit (SPU) office.
The department puts it on record that the aim of the LGBTI workshop is to create an awareness and sensitise delegates regarding the rights of the LGBTI community, create an understanding of human sexuality and communicate the challenges they face with regards to hate crimes, homophobia, transphobia, corrective rape and bullying in our schools.
The department therefore distances itself from both the content and the form of this email. The department has thus started an internal investigation and is working very hard to get the source of this email which distorted the activities and objectives of the department’s programs.
