Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Adv. Michael Masutha will open a new Proto-Type School and proceed to lead an Offender Graduation Celebration at the Boksburg Correctional Facility on Friday, 21 September 2018.
This years’ Offender Graduation Celebration sees one offender scooping a Masters’ Degree in Tax Law, while 126 others from various Correctional Centres in the Gauteng Region will be attaining Certificates, Diplomas, Bachelor’s and Honours Degrees which they worked hard to achieve.
Education is vital for the evolution of the nation. It offers an opportunity to explore new ideas which we then use to create a better world that is safe and secure for everyone who lives in it. The Department of Correctional Services believes through education, offenders are presented with an opportunity to acquire knowledge, skill, technique, and information which will enable them to know their rights, their duty towards their families, society and the nation – influence their way of thinking in general.
Our core mandate as the Department is to rehabilitate offenders and one of the ways of achieving that objective is to provide offenders with proper and competitive education from within our Centres. By so doing we aim to curb and/or minimise the levels of recidivism and generally ensuring that the offenders are prepared for life after serving their sentences. Offenders are given support to obtain education from school level up to a higher education and training level.
Liberty Life will also be donating an e-Library on the day.
