The Northern Cape Department of Education can confirm an incident where two learners stabbed each other with knives inside the school premises at Carlton Van Heerden hoerskool, in Upington. This incident happened on Tuesday following an argument between the two learners, Grade 10 and Grade 9 respectively.
Both learners sustained stabbing wounds and were referred to hospital for medical attention.
The Department would like to condemn this incident with the strongest contempt it deserves. Such incidences compromise the safety of both learners and teachers and put their lives at risk.
The two learners have since been suspended pending an internal investigation and relevant disciplinary processes.
Post-trauma counselling was provided to learners who witnessed the incident.
The Police has also been roped in to assist with regular searches and seizures of illegal substances and dangerous weapons. The Department will be strengthening school safety controls to curb similar incidences from taking place.
